323, 323, 222, 212… SOUND FAMILIAR? At each hygiene visit to our office, we check your “numbers.” Most of you probably know what your numbers are after hearing them repeated a few times, but do you know what they mean?
Understanding The Numbers
Here is what we are doing: We are measuring the depth of the space between your teeth and your gums. We are also looking for gum inflammation, bleeding, and checking to see if we feel any tartar below your gums. Healthy gums will have no bleeding, no inflammation, no tartar, and 1, 2, and 3mm measurements. When gums have deeper numbers, bleeding, and inflammation, this is a sign of gum disease (also known as periodontal disease).
Why The Numbers Matter
Gum disease is the number 1 cause of tooth loss in adults. Estimates show that nearly two thirds of the population have some form of gum disease. Gum disease is a painless, inflammatory disease of the gums and bone that surround and support your teeth. At advanced stages, gum disease can cause tooth loss, but that’s not all. Recent research shows a strong correlation between gum disease and other diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and many others. The bacteria that cause gum disease may also play a role in the development and progression of these diseases.
We’re Looking After Your Health
Knowing your numbers is a crucial step in fighting gum disease and reducing your risk of developing any diseases connected to it. As a preventive health specialist, your hygienist is in a unique position to partner with you and your other healthcare providers to help educate you on the oral/systemic link and help prevent tooth loss.
