DO YOU HAVE SLEEP APNEA or suspect it is affecting a loved one? Or are you woken up on a regular basis because your spouse is snoring so loudly? What does this mean and how could it be helped?
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea, as described by the American Lung Association, is a very common disorder that causes you to stop breathing briefly while you sleep. More than 12 million Americans have sleep apnea, which can go unnoticed but can cause serious health problems if not treated.
Some Common Symptoms Of Sleep Apnea Are:
- Excessive sleepiness during the daytime.
- Waking up abruptly, perhaps with a loud snort or choking feeling.
- Insomnia (difficulty staying asleep).
- Waking up in the morning with a sore throat or dry mouth.
- Waking up in the morning with a headache.
What To Do If You Suffer From Sleep Apnea
Now that we are familiar with the signs and symptoms, what do you do if you suspect you or a loved one is affected by this disorder? We would first refer you to your general physician who will be able to run some tests and probably have you participate in a sleep study. By doing so, your breathing patterns, heart rates and oxygen levels will be monitored to determine your risk while you sleep.
A CPAP Machine May Be Able To Help
Most often, if it is determined that you suffer from sleep apnea, a CPAP machine will be prescribed for you to use while you sleep. A CPAP machine increases air pressure in your throat so that your airway does not collapse when you breathe in. When you use a CPAP, your bed partner may sleep better, too.
There Are Other Options
Often times, after a little getting used to, patients become comfortable using the CPAP machines and find themselves sleeping much better and not feeling so tired throughout the day. Sometimes, though, patients just don’t get comfortable with the machine and might be looking for other options. Dr. Costello can work with your physician in determining which appliance may benefit you. As this diagnosis becomes more common, we are finding new ways to help.
TAP3, An Oral Appliance, Can Also Help
The Thornton Adjustable Positioner® (TAP®) is a simple, patient-friendly treatment solution for snoring and sleep apnea. The TAP holds the lower jaw in a forward position so that it does not fall open during the night and cause the airway to collapse. It maintains a clear airway to reduce snoring and improve breathing. If any of the above symptoms sound familiar, ask us for some information. We are happy to help you take the first step towards a better night’s sleep!
